Early Life

Adam Miller released his first 7-inch record titled “Beach of Infants/Steps” as a solo project, with Handheld Heart as the publisher. This debut was recorded in Seattle, Washington, using a Tascam 4-track recording system.

Chromatics had expanded to include four members at the time of the release, with Miller being the only constant throughout their history.

Miller was also a member of The Vogue, a Seattle-based band that gained media attention. The Vogue were barely out of high school when they released art punk that was compared to The Fall. This band featured Johnny Whitney of The Blood Brothers on vocals and Hannah Blilie of The Gossip on drums.

With the departure of The Vogue’s keyboardist, the remaining members created Soiled Doves, releasing one 7-inch and one album. Although Adam Miller started Chromatics as a solo band, he immediately enlisted most of The Soiled Doves’ roster.

Adam Miller took over as the singer. Devin Welch was a guitarist. Michelle Nolan, a newcomer, performed on bass guitar. Blilie was a drummer. All members except Miller quit joining Shoplifting after their debut album Chrome Rats vs. Basement Rutz was released on Gold Standard Labs in 2003.

Career

In 2005, the band changed its musical style, adopting a more electronic sound. This musical transition was greatly influenced by the artistic achievements of Italian disco and synth-pop performers from the 1980s, who left an indelible mark on their creative approach.

Furthermore, the band drew inspiration from modern electronic musicians such as The Knife and Boards of Canada, who helped shape their fresh sonic identity.

The Chromatics have also been featured in several films and television shows, including Drive (2011), The Bling Ring (2013), and Twin Peaks: The Return (2017).

Chromatics’s career was brief but significant. They contributed to the revival of interest in electronic music in the 2000s, and their sound has influenced several other bands. They will be remembered as one of their day’s most influential electronic music groups.
